  1. Remembering Major Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day
  • In honour of Dhyan Chand, August 29 is also celebrated as National Sports Day, when various sporting honors are bestowed upon athletes from India. Known for his sublime goal-scoring laurels and extraordinary ball control, Dhyan Chand is regarded as the greatest field hockey player of all time.
  • More so for earning three gold medals for India during the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics, a feat that made India a force to reckon with in hockey. Having scored more than 400 goals during his international career, Dhyan Chand would go on to play till 1948, at which time he was 42.
  • He was awarded the Padma Bhusan in 1956 by the Indian government for his splendid contribution to Indian hockey and continues to be in the fray for being conferred the Bharat Ratna.

  1. Vice President launches National Sports Talent Search Portal
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu officially launched the Sports Ministry’s much-awaited ‘National Sports Talent Search Portal’ at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi
  • The portal will provide a three step simple process for registration, profile creation and upload of achievements.
  • The portal will enable any person from across India to upload his information and as per that the ministry will tap their talent and train them further in their respective discipline.
  • The portal will also be available as an App which can be downloaded on smartphones.

  1. Five year anti-dumping duty on sodium nitrite imports from China
  • The Finance Ministry has imposed a five year anti-dumping duty on Sodium Nitrite imports from China.
  • Deepak Nitrite Ltd had filed the petition, which was also supported by Punjab Chemicals & Crop Protection Ltd, seeking sunset review investigations on Sodium Nitrite imports from China. There are two more producers of Sodium Nitrite in the country – National Fertilisers Ltd and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited.
  • Based on the recommendations of the Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry in its final findings of its third sunset review investigations, the revenue department has imposed definitive anti-dumping duty of $ 72.95 per tonne on Sodium Nitrite imports from China.
  • Sodium Nitrite is an oxidizing and also a reducing agent. It is a white crystalline powder mostly used in the pharmaceutical and dye industries, lubricants, lubricants, construction chemicals, rubber blowing agent, meat processing, and textiles.

 

  1. India, Germany ink pact to boost green energy ties
  • India has entered into a pact with Germany to improve parameters for grid integration of renewable energies.
  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH India on behalf of Germany signed an agreement on technical cooperation under the “Indo-German Energy Programme – Green Energy Corridors (IGEN-GEC)”.
  • GIZ and MNRE will work on improving market mechanisms and regulations for integration of renewable energies, advancing technical and institutional conditions in specified target states, regions and on a national level, adding human capacities to handle systemic (strategic, managerial, financial, technical) renewable energies integration in an efficient and effective manner.

  1. Kenya imposes world’s toughest law against plastic bags
  • Kenyans producing, selling or even using plastic bags will risk imprisonment of up to four years or fines of $40,000 , as the world’s toughest law aimed at reducing plastic pollution came into effect.
  • The East African nation joins more than 40 other countries that have banned, partly banned or taxed single use plastic bags, including China, France, Rwanda, and Italy.
  • It took Kenya three attempts over ten years to finally pass the ban, and not everyone is a fan.
  • Big Kenyan supermarket chains like France’s Carrefour and Nakumatt have already started offering customers cloth bags as alternatives.

  1. NRDC wins two awards.
  • NRDC, the technology transfer and commercialisation arm of the Ministry of Science & Technology, has won two accolades.
  • It has won the Assocham Services Excellence Award 2017 and its Chairman and Managing Director, H Purushotham, an international recognition.
  • The International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) Sweden honoured Purushotham with the IAAM Medal 2017 for his outstanding R&D contributions in the Advanced Materials Science & Technology during its award ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
  • The award was presented during the three-day European Advanced Materials Congress held from August 22-24, where over 800 researchers/ scientists representing 92 countries had congregated.
  • NRDC also won the Assocham Services Excellence Awards 2017 in the area of Technology Transfer Services. NRDC has transferred IPs and technologies to about 5,000 SMEs /start-ups / corporates.

 

  1. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan launches Kochi Host City Logo for FIFA U-17 World Cup
  •  Kerala Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan launched the host city logo for Kochi, one of the venues of FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.
  • The logo represents and reflects Kochi’s identity and will be a valuable tool in linking the local community in a global World Cup.
  •  Alongside the FIFA U-17 World Cup India official emblem, it will form a crucial link in the promotions and communications regarding the host city.

  • The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium will host eight matches this October that will feature football powerhouses Brazil, Spain and Germany among others.

  1. Indian U-15 football team claim SAFF Championships title
  • The Indian U-15 football team completed a brilliant comeback win over Nepal to win the SAFF U-15 Championships in Kathmandu.
  • They were trailing 0-1 at the interval, but second half goals from Lalrokima and Vikram clinched the trophy for the Indian side.
  • The SAFF Championships win came just days after the senior team were crowned champions in the Hero Tri-Nation Football series.
