  1. Two-day Indian Ocean Conference in Colombo
  • The conference will be held in Temple Trees, the official residence of the Lankan prime minister. It will see participation from around 35 countries and have speakers from 25 countries.
  • Foundation, a Delhi-based think tank, will host the IOC 2017 in collaboration with RSIS, Singapore, and NIFS, Colombo–both research and study centres–and the theme of the conference is peace, progress and prosperity
  • This will be second IOC conference. The first was held in Singapore last year in partnership with think tanks from Singapore, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
  • The conference will be inaugurated by Seychelles Vice-President Vincent Meriton, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan besides Shushma Swaraj.
  1. Justice Dipak Misra takes oath as 45th CJI
  • Justice Dipak Misra took the oath of office as the 45th Chief Justice of India.
  • He has a tenure of just under 14 months, till October 2, 2018.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath to Justice Misra at a brief ceremony held in the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • In May 2017, Justice Misra authored the landmark judgment confirming the death penalty of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case.
  • He also ordered patrons to stand up as a mark of respect when the National Anthem and the National Flag are featured before shows in cinema theaters.
  1. Jaitley hands over long-range surface-to-air missile to Navy
  • Defence Minister Arun Jaitley handed over the Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) jointly developed by India and Israel, to the Indian Navy, at Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL).
  • LRSAM is an advanced combat suit for missile defence against air targets and missiles, and has full capabilities of air and surface surveillance, threat alert and fire control.
  • Public sector BDL is the missile production agency for the three armed forces.
  • BDL is now equipped to take the responsibility on its own, which has been actively guided for realization and establishment by DRDO.
  • Jaitley inaugurated the ASTRA Manufacturing Unit at the BDL’s Bhanur unit. The ASTRA weapon system is an indigenously developed air-to-air Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile developed by the DRDO.
  • BVR missiles are the latest in air-to-air combat. BDL has been designated as the Lead Integrator by the DRDO.
  1. IRDAI launches central database of insurance sales persons
  • The Insuranace Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has launched a Central Database of all Insurance Sales Persons in the country.
  • Christined as `Envoy’, the database will esnure that all licensed insurance sales persons working for insurers and intermediaries including entities such as insurance agents, broker qualified persons, specified persons of corporate agents, authorized verifiers of web aggregators, point of sales persons (POS) etc do not work with multiple insurers and intermediaries in the same business category.
  • At the present stage, Envoy covers POS, specified persons of corporate agents, qualified persons of insurance brokers and authorized verifiers of web aggregators.
  1. Rural Games to take place in Delhi
  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Minister shri Vijay Goel announced that the first edition of Rural Games or Grameen Khel Mahotsav will kick-start from Delhi and will take place between 28th August to 3rd September, 2017.
  • The Rural Games will aim at popularising the indigenous games like wrestling, athletics etc. and will also have fun games like Matka Race, Tug of War for senior citizens to add the fun element in the games.
  • A Grameen Marathon marked the beginning of the Rural Games fever with participation of 16000 youth from rural Delhi.
  • In the first stage, the games will be held in Alipur, Mehrauli, Nangloi, Najafgarh and Shahadara where 10000-12000 youngsters will participate and the second stage will commence on 31st August till 01 September 2017 which will have inter-block games
  1. Tuvalu Island is the least-visited country in the World A.T UN Report
  • With beautiful beaches, low crime, and expansive natural beauty, the island of Tuvaluis an ideal getaway in the South Pacific.
  • But unlike some nearby islands, it still hasn’t been over-run by tourists. In fact, it was the least-visited country in the world in 2016, according to a report released from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
  • Tuvalu has also become a compelling place to study the effects ofclimate change. Sea levels have been rising sharply, and the U.N. listed it as one of the islands the most likely to disappear into the ocean in the 21st century.
  1. Airtel ties up with Symantec to fight cyber wars
  • Bharti Airtel has entered into a partnership with Symantec Corporation to protect businesses in India from online threats. The partnership comes amid a spike in cyber attacks over the past few months, including ransomwares such as Petya and WannaCry that disrupted systems across the world.
  • Airtel will be the exclusive Cyber Security Services partner for Symantec in India, and will distribute the US-based software firm’s enterprise security software.
  • Through the partnership, the two companies will target the IT security requirements of large enterprises, small and medium businesses, as well as the government.
  • With this partnership, under one service-level agreement, Indian organizations can bolster their cyber defense and respond to new threats as they emerge at a significantly lower operational cost.
  1. PV Sindhu wins silver at World Badminton Championships 2017
  • Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu has made India proud yet again. The young badminton star has secured a silver medal at the World Badminton Championships. Sindhu was playing against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.
  • While she lost after getting close to being the champion, India is ecstatic of her achievement, and so is Bollywood.
  • Many actors, film-makers and others from the glamour world have expressed their pride and wishes for Sindhu.
