Combined Defense Services Exam (also known as CDS Examination) is usually conducted during February & November as Exam 1 and Exam 2 respectively. The official notification for the conduct of exam is usually released in the month of November for CDS 1 Exam. Only unmarried male & female graduates are eligible to enroll themselves for the CDS Examination.

This year, the official notification was released by UPSC, on 08.11.2017. That notification read the CDS 1 Exam conduct date as 4th of February 2018, the admit card for which would be made available for the eligible candidates in the month of January 2018.

Bifurcated as; 100 for I.M.A, 12 for O.T.A. (Women), 225 for O.T.A. (Men), 32 & 45 for A.F.A. & I.N.A., respectively.

Eligibility Criteria for CDS 1 Exam 2018

  1. Nationality: Citizen of India, Bhutan, Nepal & a person of Indian Origin migrated from Tibet, Pakistan, Burma, Sri-Lanka & other east African countries.
  2. Age Limit:
    • For I.M.A., I.N.A. & O.T.A.; DOB should be between 2ndJuly 1992 and 1st July 1997.
    • For A.F.A, age should be between 20 to 24, as on 1st July 2017.
  3. Educational Qualification:
I.M.A. Degree from a recognized

university or equivalent

I.N.A. Degree in Engineering from a Recognized University
A.F.A. Degree from a Recognized University with Physics and Mathematics as subject or Bachelor’s in Engineering
O.T.A. Professional and Technical Qualification

 UPSC CDS 1 2018 Selection Procedure

Selection procedure through CDS takes place as a three-stage process, involving different procedure, namely:

  1. Written Exam: Written Exam would consist of multiple choice questions having time duration of 2hrs and maximum marks being 100 for each subject.
  2. Interview/ Intelligence Test/ Personality Test: This is a multi-round stage, which goes on for around 4 days, involving different several tests like Officers Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and Psychology tests. Group Testing Officers Tasks are also carried out during this stage.
  3. Document Verification & Medical Examination: After qualifying the second stage of several tests & other tasks, document verification would take place, after which a candidate would undergo medical tests by a Board of Service Medical Officers.

UPSC CDS 1 Exam Syllabus & Pattern

For the written exam, English & General Knowledge section would be of 2 hours each carrying 100 marks each. Except for O.T.A, another section of Elementary Mathematics would be added, also for the duration of 2 hours & carrying 100 marks. So, this brings us to the maximum marks for the institutions participating. For O.T.A., maximum marks would be 200 (for 4 hours) & for others, it would be 300 (6 hours).

Application Procedure for UPSC CDS 1 Exam 2018 

Follow the steps below to apply online for CDS exam:

Step 1: Go to the official UPSC site,

Step2:  Click on “Online Application for various examinations conducted by UPSC”, and then click “PART-1 registration of CDS”.

Step 3:  Make sure that you have read & understood each & every point of the instruction page. Click on the “YES” button.

Step 4: Fill in your personal details. After you fill up all these Necessary Details, Click on “SUBMIT” button.

Step 5: On the next page, fill up other special details for Combined Defense Service Exam. Click on “continue” button.

Step 6: Verify your application details and click on “PROCEED”

Step 7: Enter the Captcha code & click on “Agree” button. Click on “OK” button.

Step 8: Write down your registration ID which will be generated as soon as you click “OK. Now Click on “Part – II Registration”.

Step 9: To continue, Enter your registration ID, and your date of Birth & click on “Submit” button.

Step 10: Choose your examination center & press “Submit” button.

Step 11: Upload your scanned photo, and scanned signature

Step 12: Click on “Upload Image” button & “CONFIRM” & then “Continue”.

Step13: Read the declaration and click on “I agree” button.

Step 14: “Save” it for future references.

Step 15: You are finished with your application procedure.

For general/OBC male candidates: INR 200

For Women/SC/ST candidates: INR 0

UPSC CDS 1 Exam 2018 Admit Card

If a candidate has applied satisfying the norms of eligibility, he/she would be able to download the admit card from the official website of UPSC. Most probably, the admit cards for the UPSC CDS 1 exam 2018 would be made available by 3rd week of January 2018.

UPSC CDS Pay scale/Grade pay/Salary

After clearing UPSC CDS examination, one would be able to enter in the different military/defense services for serving the nation. They would get a flattering salary & moreover, some heartwarming allowances.
